NSCAA Annual Convention News: NSCAA Honors Soccer Leaders at Awards Banquet Friday, January 13

General Informaiton on NSCAA Convention

On Friday, January 13, the NSCAA Annual Convention will honor several soccer leaders at the annual Awards Banquet. Among those being recognized are Schellas Hyndman of FC Dallas, Joe Borrosh of Pittsford-Mendon High School, Gordon Miller of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association and Barry Gorman, also from FC Dallas. Among them, these individuals have dedicated over a century of service to the beautiful game.

Bill Jeffrey Award for Long-Term Service to Intercollegiate Soccer – Schellas Hyndman

In 31 years of collegiate coaching, Hyndman compiled a record of 466-121-48, including a 368-97-37 mark at SMU from 1984 to 2007. He led two different teams to the NCAA Division I College Cup on three occasions and guided Eastern Illinois to second- and third-place finishes in the NCAA Tournament. A member of the NSCAA Executive Committee from 2002-06, he served as the Association’s president in 2005. A member of the NSCAA instructional staff since 1988, he has conducted countless coaching education sessions and is a regular clinician at the NSCAA Convention. Currently the head coach of Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas, he was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2010.

The Bill Jeffrey Award recognizing long-term service to collegiate soccer is named for the former Penn State coach who played a major role in shaping soccer and the NSCAA.  Jeffrey was the head coach of the 1950 U.S. World Cup team that defeated England, 1-0, in one of the greatest upsets in the history of soccer.  He was the coach of Penn State for 26 seasons, winning 10 national college championships, and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.  A founding member of the NSCAA, he served as president of the Association in 1948. Each year, the NSCAA presents this award to a person who has raised intercollegiate soccer to new heights through his or her long-term dedication to the game.

Robert W. Robinson Award for Long-Term Service to Interscholastic Soccer – Joe Borrosh, Pittsford-Mendon High School (N.Y.)

Borrosh coached for 32 years at Pittsford’s Central and Mendon high schools. The 1989 NSCAA National High School Coach of the Year, he won six state championships and earned New York State Coach of the Year honors three times while compiling a 498-102-63 career record. He also spent 17 years on the New York State Soccer Committee, chaired the NSCAA’s High School History and Record Committee for 15 years, chaired the NSCAA Region II All-America Committee and spent six years as the High School Boys Representative on the NSCAA Board of Directors.  He was inducted into the NSCAA Hall of Fame in 2011. This award is supported by AYSO.

he Robert W. “Robby” Robinson Award recognizing long-term service to scholastic soccer was named after a Philadelphia area high school coach who has touched virtually every aspect of the NSCAA. An NSCAA Hall of Famer, Robinson is a Past President of the organization and received the Honor Award in 1999.  Each year, the NSCAA presents this award to a person who has raised interscholastic soccer to new heights through his or her long-term dedication to the game.

Charlotte Moran Award for Long-Term Service to Youth Soccer – Gordon Miller, Virginia Youth Soccer Association

The state technical director for Virginia Youth Soccer, Miller played professionally for the Denver Avalanche in the MISL. He served as Utah’s state director of coaching for Utah for several years, and was the U-19 Boys Region IV Coach before moving to Virginia. He has been a member of the US Soccer National Staff since 1994, instructing USSF coaching courses throughout the country.

The Charlotte Moran Award recognizing long-term service to youth soccer is presented annually to a person who has raised youth soccer to new heights through his or her long-term dedication to the game. The award is named in memory of Charlotte Moran, who served youth soccer for more than 30 years, including as executive director of the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association.

Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award – Barry Gorman, FC Dallas

A member of the NSCAA Academy staff since 1991, Gorman has instructed countless coaches in the past two decades. Currently the Technical Director for Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas, he has been an NSCAA member for more than 30 years and served as its president in 2002. The men’s coach at Penn State from 1988 until 2009, he led the Nittany Lions to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. A three-time NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2005.

The Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award is presented in memory of the Notre Dame coach who was serving as NSCAA’s Vice President of Education when he passed away in January 2000. It is presented to a member of the NSCAA Academy staff in recognition of positive contributions to the game of soccer and excellence in coaching education.
