Women's Soccer News: Aztec MA End WPSL Season With Another Win
Aztec MA (8-1-1) of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) put an exclamation point on the regular season with an 8-1 win over the Seacoast United Mariners. Aztec had seven different scorers in the win. With the win, the Aztecs secure the number one seed in the WPSL East playoffs and home field advantage throughout.
Kylie Strom (Boston University) opened the scoring in the 4th minute. Strom took on the Mariners defender at the top of the 18 yard box and tucked a shot past the diving goalkeeper. Twelve minutes later, Dana Bergstrom (Hofstra/ Billerica, MA) riffled a shot from the top of the 18 yard box to make it 2-0. In the 18th minute , Maddie Evans beat 2 defenders and the goalkeeper in front of the net for the third Aztec goal of the game. Greta Samuelsdottir (Northeastern University) made it 4-0 on a breakaway in the 45th minute.
The Aztecs kept the scoring going in the 50th minute when Lucy Gildein (Sacred Heart University/ Topsfield,MA) finished a cross from Carson Laderoute (University of Vermont). The Mariners got their goal in the 52nd minute when Cassie Darrow (Falmouth High School/ Falmouth, ME) ripped a shot from the top of the 18 yard box. The Aztec regrouped and came back to score two minutes later when Hillary Savoy (Northeastern University/ Winchester, MA) put a shot from the top of the 18 yard box into the side netting. Samuelsdottir put number seven on the board with a curled shot to the far post in the 83rd minute. Caroline Dixson (University of Hartford) rounded out the scoring in the 90th minute with hard low shot to the far post which was just out of the reach of the diving Mariners goalkeeper.
With 25 points, the Aztecs get a bye in the quarter finals of the East playoffs. Aztec will host the winner of the 4th & 5th place game, participants still to be determined. The semi-final game will take place the evening of Wednesday, July 18th. Time and location to be announced.
