The Major Indoor Soccer League announced its Players of the Month for December on Monday, with the Rochester Lancers’ Mauricio Salles being named the Offensive Player of the Month, the Syracuse Silver Knights’ Jeff Hughes being named Defensive Player of the Month and the Milwaukee Wave’s Nick Vorberg being named Goalkeeper of the Month.
Salles claimed Offensive Player of the Month honors after recording 26 points in six games during December. The 33-year-old was named MISL Player of the Week on December 27th after recording a nine-point game against Norfolk, and averaged four-points per game for the month as he moved into second place in the MISL scoring race with 40 points.
Hughes has been a pivotal figure for the Silver Knights as they finished the month by winning three of their last four contests to move into second place in the MISL Eastern Division. In addition to playing solidly in defense, Hughes has become a key figure in the Silver Knights’ attack, recording 20 points in six games while scoring at least three points in each of the team’s last five outings. Hughes now leads all defenders with 32 points this season, which is also good for sixth in the league.
Nick Vorberg put in two outstanding performances for the Wave in December, going 2-0 with a 7.5 points against average as he claimed his 100th victory in a Wave uniform. Vorberg leads the league with an 8.00 goals against average, and is tied for third with a .700 save percentage.
The MISL season continues Monday, January 2, as the Lancers host the Norfolk SharX at 1 p.m. in a contest that can be seen on MISL Live from the Blue Cross Arena, with another four games scheduled for the upcoming weekend. The race for the playoffs in the MISL Eastern Division will heat up as both Syracuse and Rochester pay a visit to 1st Mariner Arena to play the Baltimore Blast on Friday and Saturday night respectively.
In the Central Division, the Missouri Comets face a pair of key games as they travel to face the Milwaukee Wave on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Arena before moving on to face the Wichita Wings on Saturday night at Hartman Arena. The Comets will hope to gain ground on the Wave at the top of the Central Division, while aiming to maintain their advantage over the Wings as they push for a second consecutive playoff berth.
