Indoor Soccer News: Former SD Sockers MVP Alan Mayer Joins MISL Staff for 2012 Combine

The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) is pleased to announce the addition of former MISL MVP Alan Mayer and the Milwaukee Wave’s Mark Litton to the coaching staff for the 2012 MISL Combine, which begins on Thursday, September 27, in Kansas City, Mo.

Mayer was the MISL MVP in the league’s 1982-83 season for the San Diego Sockers, and will offer a wealth of experience to the goalkeepers in attendance at the combine. Mayer is looking forward to passing on the knowledge he gained during his stellar career that also saw him play for the Kansas City Comets for seven seasons.

“The biggest transition [the goalkeepers will face] is getting used to the side of the indoor goal and being able to read the balls off the wall,” Mayer said. “The ability to adjust to the quickness of the indoor game, as well as the different types of shots that an indoor goalkeeper faces, are key areas as well.”

Litton, a key member of Wave coach Keith Tozer’s staff and also an assistant to Tozer on the U.S. National Futsal Team, will also offer outstanding expertise as the players are put through their paces at the Independence Events Center and KC Soccer Dome.

“Having Alan and Mark as part of our staff will offer great insight for the goalkeepers at the event,” USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor said. “As with the USL PRO Combine, where we have added specific training aspects for goalkeepers in the past two years, we expect those players transitioning from the outdoor to the indoor game will find their knowledge and coaching invaluable.”

With the application deadline having passed, and more than 150 players having submitted their resumes, invitations to the combine have been issued, with many already having been accepted. Up to 96 players will be evaluated and trained by current MISL coaches during the four-day event as the teams seek to add talent to their squads before the opening night of the 2012-13 MISL season on Friday, November 2.
