Soccer News: Messi in LA for Battle of the Stars CANCELLED
"Tomorrow's game, Battle of the Stars: Messi and Friends vs. The Rest of the World has been CANCELED due to Lionel Messi's unwillingness to perform his contractual obligation to participate," was the press release that greeted me when I checked the evening soccer news and media emails. Sad, unbelievable, incredibly disappointing and simply bad for soccer are the thoughts that flooded across my mind as I simply looked at the release, wondering if it was in jest. Perhaps a press hoax of some kind or a bad joke.
"In all the years I've been doing live events, I have never encountered a situation like this. It's unfortunate because the only losers in this scenario are the fans that were looking forward to the game, and the City of Los Angeles," said Ralina Shaw - VP of Public Relations, El Padrino Spirits, Inc.
Messi along with Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets, Alex Song, Javier Mascherano, José Manuel Pinto, Eric Abidal, Pablo Aimar, Marek Hamsik, Alvaro Pereira, Walter Gargano, DT Fabio Capello, Gerald Pique, Robinho, Giovani Dos Santos, Gerardo Torrado, Jesus Corona, Johnatan Dos Santos, Marco Fabiàn, James Rodriguez, Kevin Boateng, Antonio Cassano, Robert Lewandowski, Emiliano Insua, DT Zico, and Kun Aguero were scheduled to appear in the highly anticipated Battle of the Stars: Messi and Friends vs. The Rest of the World match at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on July 3rd at 7:30pm as part of the Battle of the Stars World Tour sponsored by Padrino Tequila.
"After hours of trying to convince Lionel Messi's management team to fulfill their contractual agreement and come to Los Angeles, it is clear they have no respect for these fans and this market. We feel that this is a blatant attempt to defraud American citizens and businesses that sponsored this event," said Todd Graham, CEO, El Padrino Spirits, Inc.
"We have no words to express our disappointment and frustration. As a brand, we put our name next to the events name, and in front of our community. We regret sponsoring this event and hope that the authorities penalize whoever is responsible of this mess," said Ines Calderon, Marketing Director, Adriana's Insurance.
All this really makes one wonder. Who is to blame? Where is the world is Messi? Is he in LA for the game? What about the rest of the star studded team of A+ players?
And then I wonder, what will I do tomorrow night as I was one of the many Lionel Messi soccer fans who looked forward to seeing the Argentinian-born footballer who, according to Celebrity Networth.com is one of the richest athletes on the planet. With a net worth exceeding $100 million, Messi does not need the appearance money.
According to Forbes, Messi is one of the highest paid athletes in the world. "Messi won FIFA's world player of the year award for a record fourth year in a row. Barcelona rewarded the 25-year old who started his career as a youth at the club with a record contract extension through 2018 that will pay him more than $20 million annually."
Of course, his salary does not reflect all the money made from Adidas launching his icon signature collection. The big question is; why is Lionel Andrés Messi not playing soccer in LA tomorrow? I only wish I knew the answer.
The press release recommended that fans contact Ticketmaster for refunds.
