Pro Soccer News: The LA Galaxy beat Chivas USA 2-1
The LA Galaxy beat Chivas USA 2-1 at Home Depot Center stadium in Carson, California on Sunday October 3, 2010.
The Galaxy claimed the Honda SuperClasico title for the third straight season and the fifth time in six years with their 2-1 win. Edson Buddle and David Beckham both scored during the first half of the match. This was Beckham's first goal of the season as he shot the ball past Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton with a freekick from 25 yards out. The match against Chivas USA was Beckham's fourth appearance this season.
LA Galaxy were able to hold on to their lead even after Eddie Lewis received his red card and the team was reduced to 10 players for the last and crucial final 15 minutes. Lewis, a great soccer player, is one of the older members of the LA Galaxy team and has earned numerous yellow and red cards throughout his soccer career.
Edson Buddle is red hot again as he scored his 15th goal of the season, matching his career-high set with LA in 2008. Buddle has become the first player in MLS history to score 40 plus with two different teams. According to the LA Galaxy website, Buddle now has two more goals than New York’s Juan Pablo Angel, Toronto FC’s Dwayne DeRosario and Philadelphia’s Sebastian LeToux, this season in the race for the Budweiser Golden Boot. He is aiming to join Landon Donovan (in 2008) and Carlos Ruiz (in 2002) as the only Galaxy players ever to finish as the league’s top goalscorer.
LA Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena says “I think the Beckham free kick, when you see the wall, there are a number of players in the wall and I think the goalkeeper is definitely not able to see the ball there, and Beckham hit the open spot. From that position the spot to put the ball is to the goalkeepers left and we said at the bench if he beats the keeper to the left, it is going to be a goal, and it was. It was a great free kick. I think Buddle had a terrific finish, as well. Stephens hit a great ball. He had a couple of chances earlier, especially when Beckham played him through and he hit the crossbar."
LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan was tackled by Chivas USA defender Carlos Borja yet Landon remained unfazed.
Our local team, the LA Galaxy, is in first place as they travel to Philadelphia for final road game of the season on Thursday.
