Soccer News: Undefeated San Diego Flash Team Up With Local Charity Tournament to Defeat Breast Cancer
The National Premier League Soccer (NPSL) Western Conference leading, San Diego Flash have thrown their support behind the Kickin’ It Challenge, San Diego’s first youth soccer tournament to benefit Breast Cancer Research.
Players from the Flash roster will be making appearances at the tournament where they will be handing out tickets specials and sharing their skills, which to date have seen them go through their NPSL season undefeated (9-2-0).
On their final home game of the season (June 30 vs. Fullerton Rangers), the Flash will also show their true colors by wearing pink on the field and inviting juniors from the Poway Vaqueros to help raise extra funds for the San Diego Affiliate of the Susan G Komen Foundation for the Cure.
Flash CEO Clent Alexander said that supporting events like the Kickin’ It Challenge are an important part of any professional clubs community outreach and social responsibilities.
“Our club is a big advocate of the soccer for social change principles," Alexander explained, "and for this reason we encourage our players to double up as role models and ambassadors for the sport locally."
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women and our involvement in this event is a way of acknowledging the amazing work that soccer moms do for the sport and our kids every day and as a way of raising funds to help find that elusive cure,” Alexander said.
Kickin’ It Challenge Organizer Toni DeCarlo was pleased to see the Flash come on board and “unite in the fight” to raise awareness of a disease which effects one in eight women in the U.S.
“This weekend is about more than just playing soccer," said DeCarlo, "it’s about giving back to our community and about making sure that our kids understand how to make a difference in the lives of others. It’s about making a difference in the lives of women battling breast cancer, it’s about showing what we can achieve when we ‘Unite in the Fight.’”
All proceeds from the weekend’s event will be donated to the San Diego Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure, DeCarlo said.
The Kickin’ It Challenge takes place this weekend (June 23-24) at Ryan Park in Escondido. Over 2000 players are expected to participate in this fantastic event and help raise much needed funds for the San Diego Affiliate of the Susan G Komen Foundation for the Cure.
