Women's Soccer News: Open Letter from WPSL Commissioner Jerry Zanelli
The following is an open letter from Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Commissioner Jerry Zanelli.
Thank you for your support in the WPSL Elite. We recognize there will be some changes next year. We plan to go ahead and reorganize it as a separate entity within the WPSL. Our plans were to start in 2013 and look forward to having time to organize the WPSL Elite.
I think we did a good job having a six month league with no advance time to cover all of the details needed to make the league function properly. We operated on $80,000 which is also amazing. This would not have happened if it wasn’t for you putting teams into the WPSL Elite. With only two months to recruit players raise money and the time and the effort put into your home field operations this was a credit to your organization.
We are proud of the WPSL Elite for providing a temporary home for the professional teams. We know that the professional teams are making an effort to reconstitute into a 100% professional league. Before we support it, we need to have details on the structure. We would like to be able to be behind the new league, but we need to make sure it is a financially viable model.
We plan to continue as we discussed a couple of years ago to develop a WPSL Elite operation that will include a WPSL Elite division within the WPSL. The 2012 WPSL Elite opportunity taught us many things which will help us continue to have a professional and amateur team league combined into one.
Thank you.
Jerry Zanelli
WPSL-WPSL Elite Commissioner
