Infinity Moves Up in Cup
Camille McDonell and Michael Guptill
The So Cal Infinity GU10 Blue dominated possession against the Inland United SC in the Coast Soccer League Spring Cup on May 8, resulting in a 3-0 win over United. Infinity will face the North County Pacific SC Thunder next in a dramatic rematch for their final pool play game of the tournament.

The first half began with growing anticipation. United needed a win and wanted to play spoiler to the Infinity undefeated run through Spring Cup. Infinity's defense anchored by its keeper, Kelly Smith, was once again stellar. The defensive line of Abi Bivens, Jalene Buschini, Abby Martinez and Daniela Moran held United to a single shot-on-goal for the half coming just minutes before the half ended.

Advancing the ball with the fluid triangle as is the trademark of teams coached by Clint Murray, Infinity dominated ball possession. The first half saw shots-on-goal by Infinity's Madison Kline, Maricarmen Reyes, Ava Gomez and Claire Murray. However, no shots saw the back of the net and the half ended in a scoreless tie.

With a possible semi-final berth in the balance, Coach Murray made halftime adjustments hoping to see results. In the 6th minute of play, Infinity's Kline passed the ball to a streaking Camille McDonnell, who tapped the ball over the diving United keeper. McDonnell then leapt over the prostrate goalie and guided the ball into the net. The goal gave Infinity the 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Infinity's Reyes found a hungry Kline in the goal area's right side. Kline, an old hat at converting chances, made quick work with a beautifully lobbed ball over the outstretched United keeper extending the Infinity lead to 2-0.

At the 16th minute of the second half, Infinity's Gomez passed the ball to the feet of Michael Guptill. She quickly struck the ball for a worm burner, scorching both the grass and the keeper in the form of a goal to put the match out of reach at 3-0.

United was held to two shots-on-goal in the second half, both from direct free kicks. Infinity’s Reyes, Gomez, Jalene Buschini and Abby Martinez all had scoring opportunities but came up just shy with the conversion. Infinity's keeper, Smith, has maintained a clean sheet throughout Spring Cup.
