World Cup Soccer earns historic ratings

15 Million people watch the USA-Ghana World Cup on ABC and San Diego Tops the Chart for Viewers
Written by Diane Scavuzzo

San Diego is the top market for soccer in the United States. The U.S. soccer team's loss to Ghana in the World Cup on ABC Saturday was the most watched Men’s World Cup game ever and earned historic TV ratings in San Diego and in America.

Saturday’s United States-Ghana match on ABC – a 2-1 U.S. loss in extra time, which eliminated the Americans from the tournament – is the most-watched FIFA World Cup game among households and viewers. The soccer game, which aired for 2.5 hours, averaged a national 8.2 rating on ABC, which represents approximately 14,863,000 viewers. In addition to the millions who tuned into ABC, viewers could watch on ESPN and FloTV and the total number of people who watched this soccer game could increase to more than 19 million – and astronomical number for a country who, up until recently, wasn’t recognized as a Soccer Nation.

San Diego was the top market delivering a 15.4 rating for the U.S-Ghana game.
San Diego was the top market for all three previous U.S. matches – vs. England (11.5, ABC), vs. Slovenia (8.5, ESPN) and vs. Algeria (8.9, ESPN).
Rounding out the top 10 for Saturday’s match were Washington, D.C. (13.8), San Francisco (13.3), Cincinnati (12.9), Las Vegas (11.7), Austin (11.4), Columbus, Ohio (10.6), Norfolk, Va. (10.6), Seattle-Tacoma (10.6) and West Palm Beach (10.5).
San Diego is the Soccer Capital of the U.S. and with more soccer fields than many other areas in the country, this area is well known as a hot bed of soccer talent.

UPDATE:  Out-of-home viewing has given ESPN/ABC’s 2010 FIFA World Cup coverage a 47 percent lift over its linear TV deliveries, and while the bars of San DIego and other major cities like Manhattan are overflowing with soccer enthusiasts, the majority of those bonus eyeballs are gravitating to the Internet.

According to ESPN Research+Analytics’ analysis of Knowledge Networks data, Internet platforms (including streams on ESPN3) have boosted the networks’ World Cup reach by 20 percent over vanilla TV numbers. Out-of-home TV accounts for a 15 percent lift, although those furtive barroom sessions are higher (18 percent) on the East Coast, where the matches air during business hours.
