Youth Soccer News: Under-14 Girls' National Team to Hold Second Training Camp of 2012 at The Home Depot Center

Southern California players are well represented. San Diego Surf and Carlsbad Lightning both have players at the Training Camp. Colin Chesters and Michael Duggan comment.

U.S. Soccer Director of Women’s Development Jill Ellis and U.S. U-15 Girls’ National Team head coach Damon Nahas will conduct the second training camp of the year for the Under-14 age group running from Aug. 12-19 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The first camp of the year, featuring 48 players, was at the end of May. This summer event will feature 36 players. In past years, the U-14 Girls’ National Team programing consisted of one large Identification Camp during the summer that featured 80-100 players. In a change of format for 2012, for the first time U.S. Soccer will stage three U-14 Girls’ National Team camps under the direction Ellis, who also oversees the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team and U.S. U-15 Girls’ National Team, and Nahas.

The final camp will take place in September. This new format allows the identification process with this age group to start a bit earlier, while giving the best young players in the country a more complete slate of National Team programming.

The camps feature the top players in the USA born in 1998. Players are identified through scores of U.S. Soccer Training Centers being staged across the country all year long, through club tournaments around the country, as well as other youth soccer development programs such as the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and U.S. Club Soccer’s id2 program. The players are also identified and selected by U.S. Soccer’s National Staff coaches and a select group of scouts from throughout the United States.

Sunny Dunphy, a midfielder with Carlsbad Elite, is just one player whose selection comes as no surprise to her club. Sunny has been with Carlsbad Lightning SC since age 9, beginning on the ‘B’ squad. She moved herself to the competitive ‘A’ program at age 12 and has since become a major factor with her team.

“Sunny shows what hard work and determination are all about,” said Carlsbad Director of Coaching (DOC) Michael Duggan, who is also her coach. “She is a tremendous athlete, but you don’t get to this level just by being a tremendous athlete. She works hard and she is getting the reward for doing it.”

“This is a great opportunity for her,” Duggan continued. “She is one of four players with our club who have moved into National Team programs in the U.S. and in Mexico.”

Colin Chesters, DOC of San Diego Surf, was equally proud of his club's contribution to the camp, Catarina Macario. "Catarina has a great understanding of the game and many special qualities," said Chesters. "She plays with a smile on her face and loves to score goals. She has to be one of the nations top forwards in the age group, and she is playing up."
