LA's goalkeeper, Josh Saunders, was amazing.
The LA Galaxy’s undefeated streak now includes international exhibitions. The Galaxy beat Boca Juniors 1-0 in the first game of the Argentine team’s U.S tour on May 23, 2010.
LA Galaxy amazing winning streak continues without the help of their key players Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle, who are away in Princeton, NJ at pre World Cup training camp.
Galaxy has won their last 9 games, including 8 wins and 2 ties in MLS contests.
The Galaxy goal was score by Tristan Bowen, the first player signed by the Galaxy from their youth program. He scored the only goal in the 83rd minute. The play was started by Mike Magee who sent a cross to Michael Stephens, the rookie from UCLA then passed to Bowen, who shot the ball straight into the goal, past Boca goalkeeper Garcia. Galaxy’s Eddie Lewis was also terrific on the field.
The real action was Galaxy’s backup goalkeeper Josh Saunders, who successfully saved Boca’s 13 attempts to score. Saunders replaced goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts (who is out with an injury). Saunders was outstanding and inspiring, tirelessly leaping to catch the ball and block goals.
More than 18,000 fans came to the Home Depot Center to watch the game and the fans made almost more noise than a packed stadium. According to Saunders, “I think everyone really enjoyed it.”
Beating Boca is a confidence builder for LA Galaxy. The highly respected Argentine club has won FIFA Club World Cup titles and countless national championships. Boca players clearly have remarkable ball control and were a tough opponent for the Galaxy.
Boca’s team was missing Martin Palermo, Gary Medes and Claudio Morel. All three players are in pre-World Cup training with the Argentine national team. Also, Juan Roman Riquelme is on the injured list as he had surgery last week and will miss the U.S. tour.
Upcoming: LA Galaxy plays Columbus Crew next Saturday and Boca plays Seattle Sounders FC next on Wednesday and the then Portland Timbers on Saturday.
