ASK the REF Background: Who is Doctor Rob?
Rob Webb is a recovering soccer parent struggling with his addiction to the sport. Webb cannot spend enough time on the field and his son can only play so many games per week. Therefore, Webb 'moonlights' as a referee and as a member of SoccerNation’s newest panel, sharing his wisdom and opinions on the unique world of soccer refereeing. As a former elite athlete and First Team Division 1 NCAA All American Water Polo player, Rob brings an intuitive understanding of the interaction between players, parents and referees.
Webb came to refereeing several years ago while standing on the sidelines enjoying a friendly AYSO soccer game. At that game Webb found a flag thrust in his hand and with no direction other than his own knowledge and common sense, he took the flag and his sideline duty.
Webb, a life long perfectionist, obtained his basic certification in 2000 and since then, has moved up (of course) to a level 5 state referee license officiating nearly 1000 matches at various levels.
Webb holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry and his former 'day job', he is now retired, found him participating in several biotech and pharmaceutical programs bringing pharmaceutical drugs to the market. When not refereeing, Webb now spends his time as a highly sought after consultant with start-up Pharmaceutical companies and sits on the board of the San Diego County Referees Association.
While most referees shy away from the criticism of players, parents and coaches, Webb welcomes the interaction and the opportunity to learn, grow and teach. SoccerNation is excited to have Dr. Webb on our team and hope our members gain a better understanding of mechanics, misconceptions and more through his humorous and often controversial but always fair, points of view.
