| Landon Donovan scoring his 100th MLS season goal |
U.S.
World Cup soccer star and
LA Galaxy midfielder,
Landon Donovan, scored his 100
th MLS regular season goal on August 1, 2010. This amazing accomplishment for
Donovan came during the
LA Galaxy’s 3-2 loss to the
Chicago Fire. This was LA Galaxy’s first loss at home in front of a nearly packed stadium. Donovan’s goal was a penalty kick which he successfully shot into the back of the net.
Donovan is quoted on the
LA Galaxy website as saying “I’m certainly proud of it because not a lot of players do that,” said Donovan. “But I wish that it would have come in a better manner.”
Very few soccer players ever score 100 goals during a single season. There are only six other players to score 100 regular season goals. Donovan scored his 101st goal during this game as well, also with a penalty kick. It is sad that this major achievement was spoiled by the team’s loss. Regardless of individual accomplishments, soccer is a team sport and Donovan’s momentous goal went without the celebration it deserved.
The fate of the match between LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire was set early on when the home team conceded 3 goals within the first 20 minutes. Chicago Fire’s Marco Pappa, Collins John, and Mike Banner scored.
