College Soccer News: Terrapins and Seminoles Continue to Dominate NSCAA Polls

For the second week in a row, both the University of Maryland men and Florida State University women captured all of the First Place votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I College Soccer polls. It also marked the fifth straight time the Seminoles garnered all 33 votes in women’s soccer. Both polls also held steady at the top three positions, although some shakeups did occur elsewhere in the Top Ten.

Florida State (14-0-0) continued an outstanding undefeated run after defeating Virginia Tech (No. 22/11-4-1) and Virginia (No. 14/11-4-1) by identical 1-0 scores over the week. The matches were the Seminoles’ seventh and eighth straight clean sheet performances, although it took overtime to defeat Virginia. Senior Ines Jaurena notched a golden goal in the 96th minute of play for the victory. It was Jaurena’s third game-winning goal of the season.

Stanford (12-1-1) and UCLA (12-0-2) held steady at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, after identical one-match weeks. The Cardinal defeated Arizona 4-1, while the Bruins downed Washington 1-0. The two teams will be looking ahead to October 28 when they will meet head-to-head at UCLA’s Drake Stadium.

Penn State (No. 4/14-2-0) and BYU (No. 5/13-1-1) also remained in place after their week of competition. The Nittany Lions took a 4-0 road win against Nebraska on Friday and a 2-1 win at Iowa on Sunday. Meanwhile the Cougars defeated San Francisco 3-1 on the road and Portland 2-1 at home.

San Diego State University (14-1-1) continue their climb in the rankings, moving up to No. 6 after defeating Mountain West Conference rivals UNLV 2-1 and Fresno State 3-1. The Aztecs replaced Duke (11-3-2), who dropped to No. 8 following a 3-0 victory over N.C. State and a 1-1 draw in double overtime against Wake Forest (No. 13/10-3-3). Rounding out the Top Ten are Maryland (No. 7/11-3-2), Texas A&M (No. 9/14-2-1) and North Carolina (No. 10/8-3-2)

On the men’s side, the Terrapins (11-0-1) took a 2-1 win over Duke on the road and a 2-0 win against Colgate at home to keep their top rank intact. Maryland took over the No. 1 rank in the September 25 poll and have held on to it ever since. North Carolina (No. 2/11-1-1) and Akron (No. 3/9-1-2) are close on the heels of the Terrapins. The Tar Heels took a 3-1 win over College of Charleston while Akron defeated Northern Illinois 2-0 and Michigan 1-0 to keep pace.

Connecticut (11-1-1) took advantage of a 2-1 loss by Marquette (No. 5/12-1-0) to Georgetown (No. 6/12-2-1) and UCLA’s (No. 7/9-2-2) hard-fought 4-3 win against San Diego State to move up from No. 6 to No. 4. Marquette slipped from their former No. 4 spot and UCLA dropped from No. 5, while Georgetown jumped from the No. 10 spot. Finishing off the men’s Top Ten are Old Dominion (No. 8/8-1-2) Notre Dame (No. 9/11-3-0) and Cornell (No. 10/12-0-0)
