MLS News: Chivas USA Has Fifth Pick in the MLS SuperDraft

SuperDraft will take place Thursday, January 12, in Kansas City

Chivas USA will have the fifth overall pick in the MLS 2012 SuperDraft to take place during the NSCAA Annual Convention on Thursday, January 12, at 9:00 a.m. PST live from Kansas City, Missouri. The SuperDraft will broadcast live on ESPN2 and will stream on ESPN3.com and through mlssoccer.com on the SuperDraft page. You can also keep up with Chivas USA’s selections on Thursday by following them on Twitter at @cdchivasusa.

This year Chivas USA have only one selection in the SuperDraft, but it is a big one.  The Goats have the fifth overall pick, selecting after expansion Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, New England Revolution and Toronto FC in the first round.

The fifth overall pick has produced some big names in previous drafts.  Most recently number five was goalkeeper Zac MacMath by the Philadelphia Union in 2011.  Arguably the best player taken number five was Sacha Kljestan in 2006.  Chivas USA hit it big that year and will be hoping to be similarly successful this time.

Chivas USA also has four picks in the Supplemental Draft, held by conference call the following week on Tuesday, January 17.  The Red-and-White draft fifth in the first round (which is the third round overall after the two SuperDraft rounds) and have three picks in the second round.

Within each conference, the Red and White will play the same number of in-conference and out-of-conference games, 10 clubs will qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs – the top five in points from each conference at the end of the regular season.

Chivas USA’s 2012 regular season schedule will feature 12 nationally televised matches, including eight on Galavision, two on ESPN2, one on ESPN Deportes and the Goats debut on the newly launched NBC Sports Network (NBCSN).

First Kick 2012, presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods for Chivas USA will kick off its 8th MLS season on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at The Home Depot Center against MLS Cup runner up Houston Dynamo, in a match that will be nationally televised on Galavisión at 4pm PT. For the 2012 season the SuperClasico will be featured on 3 occasions, including 2 of those matches with the Goats as the home team.

The 2012 MLS Regular Season will conclude Sunday, Oct. 28 with three games, followed by the MLS Cup Playoffs and the championship game – MLS Cup 2012 – on Dec. 1, hosted by one of the two finalists. From First Kick to MLS Cup, the calendar footprint of the 2012 season is 267 days – the longest in League history (as is the regular season, at 232 days).
