Women's Soccer News: Red Stars to Host Open Tryouts for 2012 WPSL Elite League Season

Coaching Staff to Evaluate Talent on March 31/April 1

The Chicago Red Stars of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Elite League have announced that the team will be hosting an open tryout for prospective players the weekend of March 31st and April 1st. Head Coach Rory Dames and additional coaching staff will be on hand for player evaluations. Players will be able to showcase their skills and potentially earn an invite to the Red Stars preseason training camp in April and May, and ultimately a possible roster spot for the inaugural year of the WPSL Elite League.

The new WPSL Elite League will feature three teams with Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) history: the Red Stars, the Boston Breakers and the 2011 WPS Champion Western New York Flash. Filling out the league are WPSL teams ASA Chesapeake Charge, Aztec MA, FC Indiana, New England Mutiny and the newly formed Philadelphia Fever.

The Chicago Red Stars are committed to providing an opportunity for all qualified players to get a shot at playing in the top leagues and ultimately get seen by the national teams. The Red Stars plan to field up to two full rosters of players to compete in WPSL Elite and other tournaments and cups this summer.

The Red Stars have already begun filling their roster with top talent, recently announcing the signing of former WPS Atlanta Beat team captain Lori Chalupny. The versatile midfielder/defender has also captained the U.S. Women’s National Team, earning a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics, and led the University of North Carolina to the NCAA Championship.

All players interested in attending will be required to fill out a registration form and waiver. Registration is $75 and is payable via credit card at http://redstarsgear.com/tryouts2012.

Saturday’s tryout will run from approximately 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with an additional session for some participants to take place Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Final times and location will be confirmed shortly.

The tryout is open to all female players over the age of 18. College players will not have their NCAA eligibility affected by their participation in these tryouts or by addition to the Red Stars roster.
