Youth Soccer News: Carlsbad Lightning Star Rey Ortiz Named Cal South Player of the Year
Since he first hit the pitch at Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club (CLSC), Rey Ortiz has been turning heads. Not only has he become captain on his Carlsbad Elite team, Ortiz has played with Cal South ODP and Pro+ for several years and in 2011 was called up for the U.S. U15 Boys’ National Team. Now the plucky forward has another honor to his name – Cal South Sports Authority Player of the Year.
“He is, without a doubt, I believe one of the best soccer players in America,” said Cal South Technical Director Steve Hoffman at the award ceremony. “The sky’s the limit for him.”
"Rey is a Fantastic player but more importantly a pleasure to work with," said CLSC Director of Coaching Michael Duggan. "He is never without a smile; he truly has a bright future in the game."
“This award is totally deserved and I'm sure he will go on to play at the highest level in the game,” said CLSC coach Paul Holohan, who heads Ortiz’s Elite team. “I was so proud of Rey getting this award.”
When Ortiz was first called up to the U.S. U15 team, Duggan described him as having an “appetite for the game of soccer,” and complemented him on his work ethic and attitude. “No matter what the conditions and environment are, Ortiz always approaches everything in a positive manner. He is a great player to watch.”
Since that time Ortiz has continued to grow as both a player and a leader. As the captain of his 1997 Cal South team that will compete for a National Championship in Dallas Texas, Ortiz has the role of on-field leader for a talented group of young men.
“I have coached Rey Ortiz now for 6 years and he has always been a very good player,” Holohan said. “In recent times he has matured as a player both physically and mentally and is now a leader and shows great example to the other players.”
Congratulations to Rey Ortiz, 2013 Cal South Sports Authority Player of the Year.
