Advice on to Succeed @ Compeitive Youth Soccer Tryouts for 2012

Competitive Youth Soccer Tryout Information and Schedule for 2012

SN:  What should a player do at soccer tryouts?  What is your advice?

Bo: “Tryouts are about setting yourself apart. It is like dating, show up with positive attitude and show your best sides. Demonstrate what you can bring, what you are best at. For example, make sure you take a throw in, if you have a long throw in make you show it off.  If you are good at shooting, take shots.  If you have speed, demonstrate your speed.  If you are good at headers, let the coaches know.”

SN: Great tips, any more advice?

Bo: “Be comfortable with speaking, be loud, be heard.   Make eye contact, be confident, and introduce yourself to the coach.  Have energy. And, don’t try to be a good dribbler, if you are not."

SN: Does what a player wear make a difference?  For instance, does wearing bright colored cleats help a player get noticed?

Bo: “Red cleats can really help a player stand out and be seen, but this can be good and bad.  You will stand out for what you do.  It is easier for the coach to remember what a player does if he visually stands out.  Bring a second pair of black cleats so you can stand out if everyone else is wearing bright cleats.”

“Ask questions. For example, if you are a center mid, ask the coach what he wants from your position.  Ask ‘What would my job description be if I were going to play for you?"

SN:  Any tips for the parents?

Bo: “Yes. Know the history of the coach your child will be playing for.  Some players work best with a yeller others crumble, some players need positive reinforcement others less so.  Match your child to the coach’s style."

"And remember; Playing time, Winning and Favorite Position.  You can only have two out of the three.  Getting all three happens to only 1%. We are all looking for Utopia.  It is important to have realistic goals."
