Youth Soccer News: FC Blades GU13 Earn Victory in Coast Soccer League Match Up

On Saturday, October 6, the FC Blades Girls Under-13 beat Desert United G99 3-2 in the Coast Soccer League’s competitive Girls Under-13 Gold division. The victory built upon last week’s momentum from a strong 0-0 draw with Select Cities Avalance and gives FC Blades their first win of the young season.

The afternoon game at Hicks Canyon Park in Irvine proved to be a riveting one. Desert United capitalized on an early opportunity, taking an early 1-0lead with a beautiful strike from the left side of the area. Not to be deterred, the Tim Woodcock-coached Blades team continued to fight hard with shots being equal for both teams, with just the single goal as the difference as the half came to a close.

The battle continued into the second half. At the 11th minute of the half, FC Blades’ Kelly Cottone took a direct free kick from three yards beyond the United goal area. The ball found its way to teammate Averee Dubach, who took a shot inside the left half of the area. The initial shot was blocked by the tenacious United keeper. However, Dubach found the rebound at her feet and this time hit the back of the net to even up the match at 1 goal apiece.

Just minutes later, Blades’ midfielder Frances Lahr found Dubach making a run beyond the United defense. Dubach made quick work of slotting a goal to the right of United’s keeper. The goal gave Blades a one goal lead of 2-1 at the 13th minute of the second half.

At the 20 minute mark of the second half, Blades’ Lauren Medow fought hard to bring the ball down the right side of the pitch. Medow took on two defenders, splitting them and laying off the ball to streaking teammate Ava Gomez on the left side of the area. Gomez deftly put in a goal at the far post giving Blades a commanding 3-1 lead.

The speed of United’s left forward proved tough to contain, and her shot broke the plane of the goal once again at the 27th minute of the second half, cutting the lead to a single goal. However, Gomez’s goal proved to be the game winner as time expired with Blades notching their first victory of the season with a final 3-2 score.
