| Beach Soccer Jam 2011 will be held on the 23rd and 24th of April at Fiesta Island, San Diego |
|
Fiesta Island, which is near Mission Bay and Sea World, will be transformed into a beach soccer haven for adults and youth players on the 23rd and 24th of April.
Beach Soccer Jam will have 20 fields set up for the competition plus the professional section and are expecting over 100 teams at the bay front on Fiesta Island across from Sea World. There will be a Fun Zone with attractions for the kids, the San Diego Sockers “Legends Game” in the center court Beach Soccer Jam Arena with the game to be announced by radio and TV personality Gary Kelley, in addition there will be a Professional Division with a purse prize as well as Foot Volley and War of the Keepers plus Brazilian dancers to bring beach soccer back to its Brazilian origins.
Beach soccer is the official beginning of Spring in San Diego and the Beach Soccer Jam is the first of the beach soccer tournaments. Sand, soccer balls and people, how can you stay away?

Agility, stamina, finesse, high speed, and excitement – these attributes very fittingly describe the dynamic sport of beach soccer. Played on the beach or in the sand, the game encourages a high level of fitness that comes from running continuously on a surface that is less stable than turf. It also brings about better conditioning in the players' legs and glutes than would be experienced on a traditional pitch. Given the softer, more forgiving nature of clean sand, many players are more inclined to attempt the "glory shots" rarely seen in the grass game. These include scissor kicks, flying headers, and bicycle kicks for example.
The game is immensely fast-paced and is played on a more compact pitch measuring only 90 x 120 feet (a normal soccer game is played on a pitch 246 x 360 feet). This allows players to shoot from virtually anywhere keeping the goalie on his/her toes at all times. A shot attempt is made once every 30 seconds with a goal scored on average of once every 3-4 minutes – an average game has 11 goals scored. The movement and passing of the ball is vastly different from regular soccer as well. The sand can be unpredictable for level passing so most players choose to set and pass the ball in the air. Expect to see lots of chest traps, shoulder pops, headers, and quick flick passes in a game of beach soccer.
Each team consists of four players and a goalkeeper with no off-sides. Unlimited substitutions allow for fresh legs at all times and keeps the game moving fluidly throughout all three 12-minute periods. A beach soccer game always has a winning team. In the event of a tie an overtime period is played, followed by penalty kicks if the tie remains. Beach soccer is indeed quite different in play and strategy than traditional soccer and offers the opportunity to develop unique skills away from the grass game. It is no wonder that top-flight professional teams the world over have begun to utilize sand pitches at their facilities for this very reason:
There is no doubt that playing beach soccer makes a better soccer player...and one that has a lot of fun.

| "Soccer is always fun but beach soccer is especially fun because you get to play barefoot," Sockers player Tim Roty said. "Playing 4 v 4 allows for a lot of creativity." |

The San Diego Sockers will be out for an exhibition match. "Playing beach soccer last year was a great experience," San Diego Sockers player Ze Roberto said. "I used to play beach soccer back in Brazil with my friends, so it was fun to do it here in San Diego with my Sockers teammates."
Last year, the Sockers beat the Sand Crabs in an amazing, sand flying, pro player falling, fabulous match. Fans will just have to wait to see what happens this year.

Tournament Director Raffi Ruotolo told SN: "Last year, the tournament was a huge success and now we are looking for an even better experience for our teams this year, our third annual Beach Soccer Jam.
"The kids, professional players and families enjoy coming to the beach, relaxing and playing and watching soccer. It is a great atmosphere."
