Beach Soccer Jam 2010 was held on April 25.
Sand, soccer balls and people, how can you loose? Beach soccer is the official beginning of Spring in San Diego and the Soccer Jam held last weekend on Fiesta Island was great fun.
One exciting game was the semi final in the men’s open division that saw our very own San Diego Sockers match their skills with the Sand Crabs.
"Soccer is always fun but beach soccer is especially fun because you get to play barefoot," Sockers player Tim Roty said. "Playing 4 v 4 allows for a lot of creativity."
|
The Sockers came out with a 7-2 win but not without a fight. The Sand Crabs threw all they had at the Sockers, including hitting a post and at one point their amazing goal keeper actually dribbled down the pitch and hammered a shot just wide of the goalie. That’s not something you see every day! Reminds us of the days when Jorge Campos used to play goalie for Mexico and he would get up to some crazy antics.
|
SoccerNation.com spoke with Damien Quinn after the game. Quinn said "The game was over in the first half ..." but from the sidelines it looked like the Sand Crabs had the Sockers working hard.
"Playing beach soccer this past weekend was such a great experience," Sockers player Ze Roberto said. "I used to play back in Brazil at the beach with my friends, so it was fun to do it here in San Diego with my teammates, especially going undefeated and winning the whole tournament."
Tournament Director Raffi Ruotolo told SN: "The tournament was a huge success for the second year, the kids and families enjoyed it a lot." Ruotolo confirmed that he received lots of positive feedback and that the crowd had loved "the Legends game and the entertainment with the Capoeira and Samba Dancers."
