Youth Soccer News: Albion SC Development Program Produces Resounding Successes

Albion Soccer Club’s Development Program (U8-U10 teams) has just completed a very successful year of growth and competition. The program, which focuses on laying the foundation needed for players to be successful, helps young athletes master the skills that give them a head start in soccer. A major element of the Development Program is mastery of the “core curriculum” of Albion SC. These are areas of technical training that help prepare young players to move up to the 11v11 level.

In addition to the regular training, the Development Program offers players the opportunity to play or train with other teams to increase their time on the ball. The Friday Development Clinics and juggling sessions provide even more chances to develop the skills that will take players to the next level. This focus on development has translated to success on the pitch.

Development Program teams had a great deal of success in Presidio Soccer League, with the GU8 and GU10 Red winning the league championships. On the boys’ side, the BU10 White team won the AAA division and BU9 White won the Blue division in Presidio. Altogether, Albion SC had four teams in the Presidio League BU9 age group, with all of them winning league or finishing in second place.

Aside from success over the last couple of weeks and during the season, there was also a lot to consider over the summer as Albion Development Program teams took several tournament championships. Over the past year, the BU9 White, BU10 White and BU10 Red all won the Tournament of Champions and the BU9 White and BU10 White won at Surf Thanksgiving Tournament. At Chula Vista Premier Cup, both BU10 White and BU9 White brought home championship hardware, with the U9 squad playing up in the U10 Silver Division. Albion teams also took championships at RSF Attack Cup, SD United Tournament, Albion Cup and several other tournaments (view championship pictures here).

"The success on the field comes from the development on the training ground,” said Wayne Crowe, Development Director. “We have a very focused curriculum within the club, and we want all our players to master this curriculum. To keep our players accountable in their development, we do a lot of spot checks and testing to make sure the player is mastering our core curriculum during the year.”

The coaches and directors at Albion SC feel that it is extremely important to give players the correct development at the ages of 7, 8 and 9 years old. This foundation will set them up for success as they continue to play the game. They also work with each player on setting goals and giving them the tools and training to achieve these goals. In addition to the regular training, Albion has developed a set of homework videos that players can watch in order to further practice their skills.

"These younger years are so important,” said Crowe. “We need to teach the player the correct things and look for them to challenge themselves to master these skills in a fun and enjoyable environment. A lot of the focus is on each player’s individual skill and once this gets to a good level then the player has a great foundation to play the game"
