Youth Soccer News: 2012 id2 National Selection International Tour is first US Club Soccer event to receive Olympic Development Program status
Team set to face FC Barcelona today
The 2012 id2 National Selection International Tour is the first of US Club Soccer’s events to receive Olympic Development Program (ODP) status, which has recently been granted to the organization’s id2 Program and Player Development Programs (PDPs).
In addition, the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) PDPs being held in February are also the first of the league’s events to receive Olympic Development Program status through US Club Soccer.
Members of the 2012 id2 National Selection departed Friday for Spain, with the team scheduled to face FC Barcelona at 7 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET) today. The team toured the famous L'Estadio Camp Nou on Monday and will now face FC Barcelona at the club’s official training complex – Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
The team opened the tour with a combined match against RCD Espanyol and UE Cornella on Sun. Feb. 19. Following their successful match against FC Barcelona, where they beat the mighty Barca 3-1, the competition portion of the tour will conclude with a match against Atletico Madrid on Thurs., Feb. 23, at Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas, the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the governing body of soccer in Spain.
The team will cap off the tour by attending the FC Barcelona vs. Atlético Madrid La Liga game at Estadio Vicente Calderón on Sun., Feb. 26.
Joining the squad as a member of the traveling party will be U.S. Soccer Technical Advisor Juan Carlos Michia. Numerous former members of the id2 National Selection team have earned invitations into U.S. U-14 Boys’ National Team Camps in the months immediately following past tours, including multiple players who made their first appearance at a U.S. Soccer camp.
Consistent with US Club Soccer’s philosophy that there should be zero or very little cost for participation in the id2 Program, US Club Soccer is funding the tour in conjunction with the strong support of Nike. There is no cost to players.
